If You Build it They Will Come, Won’t They?

Local online marketing begins with creating a website. In this day and age, any business must have a website. However, simply creating a website and expecting your potential customers to find you on the Internet is wishful thinking.

After you create your website you need to make sure that people can locate it, find the information you provide of value, want to give you their name and email address, and make it’s worth their while to keep returning to your website.

There are a number of ways to help people find your website that include; getting it indexed by the search engines, listing it in directories, using social media, Blog Talk Radio, article writing, posting videos to YouTube, search engine optimization (SEO), putting it on your business card, giving talks at local events, and press releases.

Before you try to get visitors to your website, you need to come up with a method to capture their information. You do this by creating an opt-in box and by giving away something of value in your niche. The visitor must give you their name and email address to receive the free give away. Make sure that what you are giving away is going to add value and reflect well on your level of expertise. Giving away something that is of high value goes along way to potentially turning a visitor into a customer.

You must get a new website indexed by the search engines. This usually takes a few days and it is accomplished by posting new content to your website, social bookmarking on sites such as Digg or StumbleUpon, and creating backlinks by writing articles, having people comment on your blog posts, or encouraging people to subscribe to the RSS feed. All of these methods can speed up the process for getting your website indexed. When your website is indexed it means that it can be found by using the search engines, but it doesn’t mean it will be on the first page or even the first 30 pages of the results.

Using social media is a powerful way to get visitors to your website and to create backlinks, which the search engines want. Use your Facebook page to promote your website and drive people to it or use Twitter to give people a link to a new content that offers them value on your area of expertise.

Create your own Blog Talk Radio show at www.BlogTalkRadio.com. It is a free service and you can schedule shows on your area of expertise and advertise your show on social media and your website. Blog Talk Radio ranks extremely well in the search engines. Naming your radio show with keywords for your business will help people find you more easily.

Writing articles is an effective way to obtain visitors to your website. Write quality articles that give good information to the reader and then offer a free give away at the end of the article and give a link to your website. This methodology is a great way to build a list of email subscribers. If the articles are of a high quality, they can often times be picked up by other resources and spread across the Internet. One of the best article directories to use is http://www.ezinearticles.com.

Posting videos that are informative about your niche to YouTube (http://www.YouTube.com) and then linking to them from your website is another great way to create visitors. You want to make sure that you invite the viewers to visit your website to obtain the free give away that you offer at the end of the video.

Don’t overlook the obvious ways to promote your website. Make sure it is on your business card, in the signature of your email messages, on any flyers that you create, on documents you send out. Remember to put it on everything.

One final method for getting visitors to your website is to write a press release about your business. The press release has to be news worthy and add value for someone reading it. You can make an offer in a press release if you are offering a new product or service for the first time. Make sure you include your website address.
